Statesman:
Friend or Foe?

StatesmanIf you’re a frequent visitor of this site, my feelings of Statesman are probably no mystery.  Statesman sets himself up as the pinnacle of human achievement.  He’s a “god among (super-powered) men.”  Granted, Statesman did do some good things in his youth.  It’s hard to say we’d be living in the same Paragon City if not for him.  He was a general in the Rikti War, he thwarted Nemesis’ attempt to control the world, and he is partially responsible for much of the legislation that protects the rights of super-powered individuals.

That may shock some of you to see, but let me clarify: The past is in the past.  Statesman did good.  His focus is now on retaining his throne.  I suppose when you’re blessed with immortality, you realize that power is often fleeting, and do what you can to keep a grasp on it.  That’s exactly what Statesman has done by turning the superheroes into his personal and doting army.  He exemplifies Lord Acton’s “absolute power corrupts absolutely” quote.  Statesman got a little taste of power and now he craves it like a junkie.

Of course, there’s also Statesman’s alter-egos that raise some eyebrows.  In recent years, we’ve had both Tyrant and Reichsman prancing around the city.  (And I thought one Statesman was bad enough!)  While most individuals have been led to believe these are beings from alternate dimensions, I’ve seen little evidence to suggest such.  My theory is Statesman likes to get his jollies out by dressing up and strutting around town.  What fun is having absolute power if you can’t smash some buildings when you want?

Even if the ridiculous notion that these men have traversed the
Statesman: Friend or Foe? multiverse to wreak havoc on Paragon City, doesn’t that say something about our fearless leader?  If every other version of Statesman we’ve encountered has a mean streak, can we really be so sure our version is so stable?  I’d imagine those alternate dimensions would mirror our own to some degree.  It’s not like Statesman has been completely innocent of wrongdoing, after all.  Take the Rikti War, for example:  Statesman had no problem throwing Rikti ships into our very city.  Sure, he was helping defeat the unearthly invaders, but it’s hard to estimate who was doing more damage.   Westgate still stands as a monument to Statesman’s recklessness.  Why do you think the army has been deployed there to clear it out, while areas like Baumton and Astoria are ignored?  He wants that blemish off his record.

Overall, Statesman has proven time and time again that he’s a corrupt leader. He brought the city back from the brink of destruction, but, at the same time, instituted himself as our dictator.  Perhaps that was what gave him ambition to do so.  Even angels lose their wings.
